I do not see the smart tags in section 2 of essential 2016. The only tag that sometimes appeats is quick analysis which means I have no autofill options.

Hi Hamish

The Smart Tag that is used in:  Lesson 2-4: Select a range of cells and understand Smart Tags is triggered by Excel's automatic error checking feature.

If you do not see the green triangle the most likely cause is that somebody has switched off automatic error checking for your copy of Excel 2016.

Changing any of Excel's eight background error-checking rules is considered to be an Expert-level skill and is covered in depth in the Expert Skills course.  You can see this (Expert Skills) video lesson here:  Lesson 4-11: Understand background error checking and error checking rules.  This lesson will teach you how to switch automatic error checking back on in the options settings.

If one of the default options has been changed (and there are hundreds of them) it is likely that other settings have also been changed that will interfere with the default behaviour of Excel.  The easiest way to work with a clean and correctly configured copy of Excel would be to create a new Windows user on your computer.  When you log on as the new user all settings will be restored to default and you will see the green triangle.

Best Regards
