I inserted a form control check box in a 2013 excel spreadsheet.  I brought up the Format Control dialogue box, protection tab, and unchecked the locked button.  I then protected the sheet but when I tried to select the check box I get the message “the cell or chart you’re trying to change is on a protected sheet”.  How can I select the check box while keeping the sheet protected?

Oops I just figured it out.  I needed to unlock the cell link as well as the Form Control.

Hi Michael,

I'm glad you were able to find the answer. You're correct that a form control's Cell Link will not work on a protected workbook unless the cell it is linked to is unlocked.

You can see this in practice in the video lesson: Expert Skills Lesson 9-9 Improve form appearance and usability.

For more on setting cell links, see the video tutorial: Expert Skills Lesson 9-3 Set form control cell links.
