Dear Lee

Several million students have downloaded the sample file set without problems so it is difficult to guess what you may be doing incorrectly.  Here are my best guesses:

1/ Watch the Excel 2013 Lesson: 1-5 Download the sample files and open and navigate a workbook.  Make sure that you are not doing anything odd when you download and expand the sample file set.  You should see all of the individual sample files in your C:\Practice folder when you have correctly downloaded.

2/ Make sure you are opening the file by first opening Excel and then opening the file and not by double-clicking a file (the double-click method will not work if file associations are corrupt on your computer).

3/ Make sure you are using a full version of Excel 2007 with service packs applied to date as shown in: Lesson 1-1 Start Excel and check your program version.

4/ Make sure you are not using a "Student Preview" or Apple Mac cut-down version of Excel (actually Excel 2007 was never released for the Apple so if you are using an Apple you are not using Excel 2007).

5/ Make sure that you didn't change the folder that the files were installed into and that you installed them automatically into C:\Practice.  If you changed this from the normal default location you may have installed into a directory that you do not have access permission to.

I've almost sure that one of the above will make you realize what is causing the error but, if not, please describe the problem in detail and let me know exactly the steps you are taking and what is happening when you try to open the sample file from inside Excel (including the precise wording of any error dialog that may appear).

Best Regards

Dear Samantha

Just work through the lessons (ideally in order).  When you need to open a sample file you'll hear the clear instruction regarding which file to open at the beginning of the video. That particular sample file is used in Session 1 of the Essential Skills course.
